How I was first Touched By Breast Cancer

Breast Cancer affects everyone involved, not just the one who is diagnosed. I had heard of Breast Cancer, but it was someone else’s problem not mine. The first time I was touched by Breast Cancer, was when my husbands Aunt died from it, leaving behind two young girls.

The younger of the two girls was riding around on her "Big Wheel" in front of the house crying. I approached the little girl and asked why was she crying? When she rode up to me, I noticed in her hand a naked "Barbie" doll. Her tear stained face looked up at me and said, "Barbie's Breasts can kill her and I want to scrape them off of her, so that she will not die." The little girl was 8 years old. I bent over and gave her a hug and I cried along with her. I was 16.

This moment forever, changed my life. The death of her mom to Breast Cancer forever changed her and her sister's lives. These two little girls would never have their mother take photos of them for their prom. They would not have their mom walk them down the isle at their wedding. They would never be able to introduce their own babies to their mother. Their father never remarried. He went on with his life and cares very deeply for his two girls. He is both their father and their mother.

I am involved in their lives. The youngest girl recently married last September and is now pregnant. She is expecting her own little girl in August this year. I have two children of my own. I have offered to help her out with motherly advice.

This was the first way that Cancer has affected my life. Many more stories are to follow. Please let me know how you have been touched by this Dis-Ease.

Thank you,

Meliss Ayr
